224 Zoo Fieldtrip - BYOWA

Bring Your Own Wild Animals Thank goodness we had a short respite from this incessant rain!! Tuesday was the First Grade fieldtrip to the Memphis Zoo. The doc gave Katie a release to go back to school (I don't know what would have happened if she had not) on Tuesday so we were all set to play.

I just had Katie and one other little girl, Brianna. Katie's Plague Friend, Mia was there with her dad and they had two more little girls, Sidney and An-he (yeah, no clue how to really spell it, but that is how it was pronounced, and I should know because I said it a hundred times). I felt sorry for Dustin, and I know Katie wanted to be with her buddy, so we all walked around together. One question though ... how did they expect him to take 3 little girls to the bathroom?? I know, moot point since we were with him, but seriously, do they not think of those questions? They are in first grade, and I know they can go by themselves, but I wouldn't want to turn them loose in the potty.

So, we started off with the exhibit that Katie is always dying to see, Creatures of the Night. Well, we tried to start there, but the building was closed. So we headed to Cat Country, but the crowd was so insane that we decided to head to the middle of the zoo and start where we might actually be able to see animals. One thing that would have been really conducive to animal viewing would be NOT screaming at the animals. No matter how often we told one of our girls to NOT YELL at the poor animals she would yell at the next one. Yes, the animals really want to come to your screeches. This giraffe had the most pointed response to the screams ... he stuck his tongue out at her!
We took the most twisted route through the zoo. If you have been to the Memphis Zoo then you will understand. Hippos, Pandas, Elephants, Sea Lion Show, back through the African animals, on through the monkeys, back to the hippos (and a potty break), the Herpetarium, Penguins, Once Upon a Farm, the Bird House, and Cat Country ... and FREEDOM! It makes a bit of a figure eight. The kids would ask to see the animal on the exact opposite side of the zoo from where we were. At least we had to walk past the animals to get to the requested spot.

No matter where we were, the kids were climbing the fences, or shimmying behind the fences, or running too far ahead. Tapping on the glass! We spent the whole time herding and admonishing and trying not to go crazy. Katie spent the whole time trying to talk me into buying her a Hawaiian Ice, but I wasn't about to buy 5 of them. I did promise her a trip to the zoo very soon with a Hawaiian Ice. But really, we had a great time. We ate our lunch while we watched the Sea Lion Show. The kids picked flowers (if they managed to pull one off before we could stop them). We made wishes by throwing pennies in the stream and rubbing the Buddha belly.I only had to say most things twice, which is sadly an improvement. It was all going so well ... until about 20 minutes before we had to turn them back in to their teachers. It was moments after I took that picture. I had one last juice pouch left, and the girls were running and playing in the "Cave" that overlooks the pumas and the jaguars, all except for one. She was THIRSTY! Oh my, dying of thirst ... so I gave her the drink. AND KATIE THREW A FIT! She said I should have saved it for her. I should have known she was thirsty (while she ran around like a wild thing). So, the day ended like most of them do ... in tears. Although she wasn't mad at me, she was mad at the girl for asking for the drink! Kids think of things in the weirdest way! It only made it worse when I stuck to my guns and told her that I wouldn't check her out when she got back to school. She was going to have to endure an entire hour of school before I would be there to pick her up. OH MY GAWD! I am the worst Mommy ever!
A fitting end to a wonderful day :)

223 Plague House

Katie is fighting off round three of Strep Throat, and this time she managed to pass it to me. Either the girls are passing it back and forth to each other, or we have an extremely rare form of penicillin resistant strep. Wouldn't that be JUST our luck! Rare illnesses are our specialty. Like it isn't enough that Katie is a daibetic mutant, she has to get rare forms of strep. Luckily we have not gotten Swine Flu, though I am pretty sure I jinxed us just then. Chip's boss got back from vacation in Mexico last week, so when Katie woke up Friday morning with a sore throat I kept her home. I didn't want to terrify the whole school.

The Swine Flu hullabaloo seems to be dying down. People have realized that WE HAVE HEALTHCARE! Although I do have a friend whose child attends one of the schools in Tennessee with a confirmed case. Obviously they closed the school, but when she tried to go to her gym she was told that she could not come in until the school re-opened. Before anyone freaks out (Mom), I am taking it seriously. I am watching the kiddos and paying attention in public to stay away from someone that is obviously hacking up a lung, but seriously! it can be passed 24 hours before symptoms show up, so we should all calm down. If you are going to get it, then you are going to get it. Wash your hands, cough into your elbow ... live your life. End rant.
While at the doctor I had them do a pregnancy test. Don't get too excited Mom, it was negative. Of course you should know that since I would not have mentioned it on my blog before I told you about it. But that isn't what I wanted to talk about. It was just some strange timing. I want three kids. I mean I REALLY want three kids, but I was just starting to come to terms with the idea that we are probably going to only have two. And really, I have two wonderful kids and they are MORE than a handful, and I only have two hands. But, that little possibility, very exciting. We don't need to be pregnant right now. We need to get little man out of diapers and I am trying to start up the photography business. But it would have been AWESOME! So, I am a bit sad. And sadly, a bit relieved. Maybe in a few years I can get my third.

222 Carrie, Carrie, Quite Contrary...

how does my garden grow?
Thankfully with very little help from me. I plan on adding to it, but for now these blooms are making me happy.

My peony finally opened!

221 Macro Monday

I don't know if it is really fair for me to jump into Macro Monday ... but only because I tend to shoot macro an awful lot right now. I shoot macro for the TtV shots, and macro for most of the flower/weed shots. I shoot macro wandering around my house looking at knick-knacks. In fact, I usually forget that my macro filter is screwed on and get confused as to why my camera refuses to Autofocus. But then I still forget to turn on my camera quite often, too.

(I'm really not THAT ditzy, but I get excited sometimes when it comes to taking pictures)

So, I am going to dive headfirst into Macro Monday over at Lisa's Chaos and try not to go crazy. If you really do love macro, then stick around, or better yet ... scroll down. Most of my posts in the last month or so have had at least one macro.

It has been a rainy weekend. I already posted some macros from the garden (scroll down to the my last post), so here are a few taken while I wandered aimlessly around the house. (or around the dining room table)

So, please remember, sometimes you have to get really really really close to something to discover its beauty ... I guess it is kinda like having a brother ;) I kid, I kid!

And, if you wanna join in the Macro Monday fun then head on over to Lisa's Chaos and add your link.

220 When April Showers Overlap Into May

All my pretty flowers get wet.
And knowing that the summer drought is not that far away, I took advantage of the rain.
My peony will be blooming any day now!! It will be the first time and I am SO excited. It is another one of the offspring of my granddaddy's plants!
The rocks that Connor had sprinkled all over the deck are even prettier.
I think of this one as the two "vanilla" parents who raised a rockstar. Playtime moves inside. I could FINALLY see the floor of Katie's room, and then she HAD to have her tent put up. At least it amused her and Connor and for a little while. Until Connor realized he could pick it up :)

Wherever you are, I hope the sun is shining. If it is not shining outside then I pray it is shining in your heart. Yeah, I went there.

219 SOOC Saturday

This weekend Melody at Slurping Life brought up a good point. It is so easy to get stuck in a photography rut when the weather starts to warm up for us. There are only so many activities to do day in and day out. I don't mind THIS rut one bit though! Each day, it is as though he rediscovers the slide. He conquers it once more! If only all ruts could be this wonderful!(Jewelz said she would like to see an action shot, and you know I am happy to oblige ... also SOOC)

218 The Yellow Rose of Horn Lake

There is a house for sale in our neighborhood ... okay, so there are A LOT of houses for sale in our neighborhood, but this particular house has roses blooming all along one side. The house is empty and there is no one there to love these poor abandoned roses, so I took it upon myself to adopt one. I chose a yellow, but there were crimson and pink roses as well that may need to be adopted later. I took our new addition outside and prepared to take a few pictures of its beauty. I was inspired by Gabrielle Kai Photography, and she is also the inspiration behind buying the Argus. She takes pics of yellow roses quite often, and they always look so soft and dreamy (all her pics do). I snapped a few pics TtV. And all of the sudden I noticed a naked chubby baby coming down the stairs. And then he reached out and grabbed our adopted rose. I thought he wanted to introduce himself, but he just wanted to make sure that he was the only baby in our family.

He did get a wonderful sensory experience.
He saw that the rose was beautiful...
He touched...
He smelled...He tried to taste...(Yes, I did change his diaper as soon as we went inside) And he heard my laughter!
Yellow Rose B.C. (Before Connor)

Yellow Rose AFTER CONNOR!

Mom, try not to jump in your car right now to come see this little guy. I know it will be hard, but we will be out in a month.
