484 Baby Name Blocks

A friend commissioned me to create some baby name blocks for a friend of hers. I had never made any, but I was sure I could figure it out. She did send me a couple links of blocks she had seen that she liked and some for the bedding that would be in the nursery. I hope I was able to create something that the mom-to-be will love.

My arms got a workout cutting the blocks by hand. Sanding and priming the blocks also took longer than I expected. I am not used to waiting for paint to dry... Patience has never been my virtue. For this I had to learn to exercise a little restraint.

The bedding had dogs and sports balls on it. I was having trouble fitting the dogs in with the letters, so I created the two extra blocks for the pups.

I think they turned out pretty cute, and my friend was happy with them ... Now I just am keeping my fingers crossed that Aydrian's mom will like them, too.

484 A New Distraction?

I was in Michaels buying a few things for a project when I walked by the needle felting section... And I couldn't turn down this kit and a few packages of felt to play with. The kit was on clearance for $5.99 and the packages were only $.79. Obviously I had to buy them.

I don't know when I will get to play with them, but I will have to make time soon. I also had to make a new Pinterest board.

483 Oh my...

I  never get on the computer anymore... (especially since my laptop decided to die on me) and honestly, I just avoid this page altogether most of the time because it makes me feel guilty. It is a reminder of all the things I have just let slip. Also, I have to come up to what was once my "craft cave" to use the computer, and I get sad just looking around at all the art and craft stuff that I haven't touched in eons.

I did want to just throw something up here to prove I am still around. I can't believe this page still gets hits every now and again that are not from my mother using the bookmarked pages on the side. I also read down all the links I have posted of other blogs, and it is sad how many of them are just as inactive as mine has become.

I want to blog more... I want to share what is going on. I want to brag on myself for starting to run... and for my husband who has taken off after me. We did our first 5K in March, and I did another in April. I am hoping to get one in for the month of May, but I have been slacking. There is a Memphis race series that I want to do, but I need to get signed up by Wednesday. I just don't have $80 for the four races laying around... even though that is an amazing deal for four races. I am hoping it all falls together.

The first race is Zoom Thru The Zoo and it is actually a four mile run, and I have really let myself down with running lately. I twisted my knee. The weather has been rainy. The weather has been hot. I ate too much. I ate too little. I have used every excuse. The truth is that with our schedules it is a bit hard to fit in a run time. The kids are still too young to leave at home even for a thirty minute jog, so we try to work them in when they are at school or both of us are home.

It also does not help my motivation that the number on the scale is holding steady. You see all of these amazing stories of weight loss, but I am not one of them. I know my body has changed for the better. How could it not when at the beginning of the year I couldn't run a full minute without dying?! My head knows that muscle weighs more than fat and blah blah blah ... but my heart wants that number to fall. And I want my pace to pick up out on the road. As long as I am carrying 50 pounds of extra weight that just won't be happening. So, it is time to buckle down and figure out what needs to change. I do not eat badly.... at least not as bad as I used to do. I am not a health nut. I don't subscribe to any particular diet plan. I try to make healthy choices, shop the outside of the grocery store. I don't want to have to turn to a doctor to help take that weight off. I want to do it myself. I want to know I can be in control of my body.

And I am rambling... of course.

Anyways... I am still here. And with any luck I will be around more often. Just need to do things worth blogging about.

482 Coffee Filter Flowers

We were asked to make some flowers to decorate the tables for our Girl Scout Awards Ceremony, so I decided to try to make some coffee filter flowers. There are a million tutorials available online, but they are insanely easy to make.

Katie and Mia had a great time helping me dye the filters. I couldn't find my food coloring... but I knew exactly where my koolaid packets were. Added bonus, scented flowers. I just grabbed some plastic bowls and mixed some water and koolaid (not the pre-sweetened kind) until it looked pretty. It is a scientific method. Then I grabbed some filters from the stack (probably 12-20 at a time) and stuck them in the koolaid. I also used some cold coffee. When they had soaked up as much color as possible I lightly squeezed them and then placed them in the oven at 250 degrees. I'm lazy, I set the whole stack in at first and then, as they dried, peeled them apart to speed it up.

I did make some that were undyed that I used watercolor paint on after the flowers were made.

Once they are all dry, and you are admiring how pretty they look stacked up, you are ready to make flowers. The larger flowers took six filters. Fold the stack of filters in half then half again. Cut scallops along the outer edge. I then folded the open edge back to the folded edge (it is in eighths now). I took a length of wire around 12 inches, placed the middle at the base and stapled it. Then wrap the wire around, twisting and doubling back, until it feels secure. I left enough wire to be able to fasten the flower to a bamboo skewer later. Then you just find the middle and separate the layers, fluffing it up until you are satisfied.

Voila... flowers.

The smaller ones I used a little different method. Cutting the bottom from the filters and then a straight cut to separate the ring. Then you just roll the layers, forming a rose as you go. Staple and wire around the base. These I left the wire long and added to the "stem" of the larger flowers creating a mini bouquet.

For leaves a grabbed three filters which I folded into fourths. I cut leaf shapes, leaving an inch or so uncut to fasten my wire to. Fold into eighths, secure with wire and add to the bouquets.

(And if I weren't trying to post from my phone I would try to place pictures to explain these steps visually. A quick google will lead you to so many better tutorials. I promise.)

481 Halloween

(I still can't figure out how to add pictures to different areas of the post on my phone, so... Hopefully they post in order)

We decided to decorate a bit more than usual this year.

We pulled the playhouse around the side and rigged a glowing jack-o-lantern head in a black robe to pop up when you opened the door. The movement didn't last long, but the kids still thought it looked cool... Except for the older kids in one group who looked second after the first were scared. "That is SO not scary!" Uh... Duh! You already saw it... And maybe you are too old to trick or treat then. Give me back the candy!!

We also set up a mini graveyard. I made two new headstones this year. Katie chose which ones she wanted, so we got Bloody Mary and Pennywise ... Katie has a thing for horror. They turned out pretty cute, and the best thing was it didn't cost a dime since it was all stuff just taking up space in the garage. Spare wood and paint. Voila! I had to giggle when a few kids refused to walk by them. Doing Halloween right :)

Katie also chose how we should carve the pumpkin. She wanted the Monster High skull... And we must have pulled it off because a few girls squealed and said how much they love Monster High. And it was darn funny to see the pumpkin attacked with power tools...

Chip took the night off to take the kids around with Mia, Mikey and Chris from up the street and I handed out candy. The kids saw the vampire/witch costume in the bins I found for $3 and a junk store years ago and insisted I wear it... We put all the seats down in the van and laid out a bunch of blankets and they were off... After I forced them to pose for a few pictures of course.

We had about a hundred kids show up and I ran out of candy pretty early (though it was a school night so Halloween ended early, too). I turned out the lights and put my feet up... And wished I had held some chocolate back for myself.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween filled with more treats than tricks!!

480 Halloween is Coming

Katie and Connor's costumes came yesterday (and Katie's bestie got her's today)! Let the excitement begin!

It also had me surfing around for fun Halloween craft ideas :) I have some ideas... And a huge stash that needs to be used.

Let the Haunting Season BEGIN!

(I finally installed the Blogger app on my phone... I just need to figure out how to place the pictures where I want them.)

479 Let's Get Physical

I have slowly been losing a few pounds here and there... Cinching my belt a little tighter.... So, I decided it was time to add a workout into my day.

It is nearly impossible for me to consistently set aside an hour or so to ride the exercise bike or hit the track. I knew I needed something FAST.

A friend I met through tumblr started doing The 30 Day Shred... She mentioned she just watches it on YouTube and it only takes about 20 minutes! DING DING DING! WE HAVE A WINNER!

So, I did it. Arrogantly thinking that having been in shape 17 years ago was going to make this a breeze!

I was SO wrong!

The first three days were hell. Everything hurt. EVERYTHING. My poor old lady knees most of all. Seriously, who knew doing 30 seconds of jumping jacks was SO hard?!

Then it started getting better... By day 6 I was looking forward to sweating. So, of course, my internet went out. I have managed a few workouts by writing out a list and using a timer... However, I made the mistake of working out in front of a mirror...that is enough to make anyone give up.

Internet got fixed today, so tomorrow I am going to start all over (it has 3 levels, you do each for 10 days)...

Oh, and I need to buy a new battery for my scale... Or not.
